‘Finding Dory’ Changes Ending After ‘Blackfish’ Controversy
“Finding Dory” still has no script, but it already has an ending. Pixar Animation Studios reportedly rewrote the story to the “Finding Nemo” sequel to have a less controversial ending than a marine park.
According to the New York Times, Pixar thought to alter the upcoming animated film’s ending because it wished to avoid possible controversy regarding fish and mammals that are taken to captivity.
The script for the film initially had an ending that involved a marine park, but a Pixar employee told the paper that the ending was scrapped because of the documentary “Blackfish,” which has given SeaWorld publicity problems.
“Blackfish” tells the story of a 12,000-pound bull orca named Tilikum who is being implicated in the deaths of three people in SeaWorld Entertainment since it was captured in 1983 off the coast of Iceland.
SeaWorld has denied the accusations, saying that director Gabriela Cowperthwaite produced an “inaccurate” and “misleading” film that exploits tragedies.
Pixar didn’t want such controversy in their family-friendly film so it has now reportedly given “Finding Dory” a new ending, which will still involve the characters in a marine park, but they will now have the option to leave the aquatic centre.
Walt Disney Studios, which houses Pixar, has no comment.
“Finding Dory” is the long-awaited sequel to the 2003 smash hit “Finding Nemo,” and will centre on the titular amnesiac Pacific regal blue tang, voiced by Ellen DeGeneres again. Albert Brooks will also return to voice Marlin the clownfish (and Nemo’s father). Joining the cast are Diane Keaton and Eugene Levy, who will both voice Dory’s parents, and Ty Burrell, who will give voice to a beluga whale.
It’s still in the early stages of production, and its overall storyline is still a mystery, but director Andrew Stanton offered a brief glimpse into the new film.
He said at D23 that the film will pick up a year after “Finding Nemo” ends. A “traumatic event causes her homing instincts to kick in,” which will prompt her to look for her missing family, and will in turn prompt Marlin and Nemo to look for her.
The film is set to be released on November 25, 2015.
