First Lady’s plane forced to abort landing due to controller’s mistake

The plane carrying the First Lady was forced to abort landing outside Washington Monday due to a controller’s mistake making her plane came too close to a cargo jet already on the runway.
Citing the report by the Washington Post, the MSNBC.com said that the plane carrying First Lady Michelle Obama had instead circled Andrews Air Force base outside Washington to avoid the giant C17 cargo jet.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) according to msnbc.com said that the Boeing 737, one of the official carriers at the White House came two miles less than the minimum separation of five miles from the military plane on the runway.
The FAA regulations call for a minimum separation of five miles in between aircrafts in order to avoid dangerous wake turbulence.
The aviation officials suspect that the incident could have stemmed from an error made by controllers assigned at the regional radar facility in Warrenton, Virginia. The FAA noted that Monday’s evening flight is now being investigated by authorities. Earlier reports show that the controllers at the Maryland air base had feared the cargo jet would fail to clear the runway in time.
