First Miss Universe Armi Kuusela: She’s Blonde And Finnish
Being blonde can be fun. But for Miss Universe beauty pageant, many brunettes dominated this annual prestigious contest for many years. For 61 years, Miss Universe title holders are mostly brunettes. So can a blonde win the title this year?
Armi Helena Kuusela was the very first lady ever crowned as Miss Universe - she is a blonde and from Finland. She won the prestigious title in 1952 and hailed as the first ever Miss Universe. The coronation was held in Long Beach, California.
There were 30 contestants from different countries who participated the very first Miss 'U' pageant and Kuusela captured the crown at age 17. She weighed 49 kilograms (108 pounds) and stood 1.65 meters (5 feet 5 inches) during that time. After being crowned as the most beautiful woman in the universe, the Finnish blonde beauty starred in her own movie, "Maailman kaunein tytto" (World's Most Beautiful Girl) with Jack Coleman.
During her reign as Miss Universe, Kuusela traveled the world and had a brief visit to the Philippines. She met Filipino Businessman Virgilio Hilario. After a whirlwind romance, she gave up her crown for less than a year to marry Hilario after attending an international trade exposition in Manila.
The newlyweds toured the U.S. and Europe before deciding to settle down in the Philippines. They had five children. When Hilario died due to heart attack in 1975, the beauty queen remarried. This time she got married to American Diplomat Albert Williams in June 1978.
She is currently living with her husband in La Jolla, a community in San Diego, California. She is still very active in participating in charities. At the same time, the former beauty is involved in cancer research at the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute.
After a blonde beauty from Finland, Miss Universe pageant produced another blonde after two years. Miss Sweden Hillive Rombin won the crown. She was the first Swede hailed as Miss Universe 1955.
