Flashback to the Very First Victoria's Secret Fashion Show
Ah yes, the open secret that is the annual Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. As usual there will be bejewelled underwear, models a dime a dozen and music from the biggest names in the industry.
This year Kanye West, Jay Z, Nicki Minaj and Maroon 5 are slated to perform, and if that sounds more like an awards show than a fashion show to you then you might be in the surprised.
Since its debut in 1995, a lot has changed for the Victoria's Secret fashion show event. Held in the Plaza Hotel at New York City, the garments then would be considered absolutely tame by today's standards and there wasn't a single wing in sight as the Angels theme was developed only two years later, in 1997.
There were no live bands, no glitter, no over-the-top borderline impractical fashion and the models that we've come to know and associate with the brand weren't even there yet. Tyra Banks joined in 1996, Heidi Klum in 1997 and Giselle Bundchen in 1999.
The show wasn't even publicly broadcast or streamed online; the first streaming was in 1999 while the show itself was only made to air in 2001.
As the years have gone by, the show developed into the production that it is now. What's a Victoria's Secret Fashion Show without 32 film and video cameras, 21 makeup artists, 19 hair stylists, and 300 pounds of glitter? More importantly, what's a Victoria's Secret Fashion Show when the models wear a shirt over their sparkling delicates?
The times certainly have changed but it's still both fun and funny to look back at a time when all it took was a bit of techno music a silk shift to start the show.
