Flip Saunders just confirmed to ESPN he is indeed the new coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves — Marc Stein (@ESPNSteinLine) June 5, 2014

The 59-year-old Saunders considered coaching Minnesota himself after missing out on Dave Joerger, who appeared to get the Timberwolves job but eventually decided to stay with the Memphis Grizzlies.

The Timberwolves were searching for a replacement for Rick Adelman, who resigned as head coach after the end of the 2013-2014 NBA season.

Saunders, who saw stints as head coach for the Timberwolves (1995-2005); Detroit Pistons (2005-2008) and Washington Wizards (2009-2012), will join the list of current NBA coaches with dual front office-coaching roles: Doc Rivers with the Los Angeles Clippers; Stan Van Gundy with the Pistons; and Gregg Popovich with the San Antonio Spurs.

Saunders led the Timberwolves to eight playoff appearances in almost 11 seasons with the team highlighted by making the 2014 Western Conference Finals. Overall as a coach for three franchises he holds a win-loss record of 638-526 in 16 seasons.

Also according to reports, Saunders is expected to hire former Minnesota player Chauncey Billups as assistant coach.
