Floyd Mayweather Jr. Expresses Sympathy for the Victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines
Boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr. expressed his sympathy for the victims of super typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.
"My thoughts and prayers are with everyone in the Philippines," he tweeted. In his tweet, he included an article posted by CNN that highlights the damage of the said super typhoon.
It is really an impressive and genuine gesture on Mayweather's part. We all know that the undefeated boxer has had his beef with Filipino fighter Manny Pacquiao in the past. There were several Twitter users who thought that his message was real and true. However, there were some who did not like it. The Filipinos shared mix emotions. "First, Floyd Mayweather makes fun of my race, now he says all his prayers go to people in the Philippines, you can't fool me," one user tweeted.
The devastating damage that the Haiyan has caused not only caught the eye of Mayweather. Many celebrities and sports personalities have also tweeted their message of support for everyone affected. NBA superstars Pau Gasol and Dikembe Mutombo also shared their message of support for the nation struck by what is deemed as the strongest typhoon of 2013.
Victoria Beckham also sends her love. "Our thoughts are with those in the Philippines, please help support typhoon #Haiyan relief," she tweeted.
Actor Danny Glover also used Twitter to express his sympathy. "Children affected by Typhoon #Haiyan in the Philippines need our help for food, water, and shelter, Donate now," he posted with a link to UNICEF.
Erik Spoelstra, who is the coach of NBA team Miami Heat, also shared his message of support. "We would like to express our condolences to the people affected by Super Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, on behalf of the Miami Heat organization," Spoelstra said in a statement posted on the official Web site of NBA. "We value the fans we have in the Philippines and we will keep them in our prayers," he added. Spoelstra is half-Filipino.
Right now, relief supports are still on-going. Contrary to what international news agencies claiming that 10,000 people were feared dead, the current death toll is 1,774, as reported by National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).
It is wonderful to know that despite these trying times, celebrities reach out.
