Welterweight champion Julio Diaz believed Amir Khan is undeserving for a title shot against the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world, insisting the Briton doesn't possess credentials to take on Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Diaz, who nearly defeated Great Britain's top welterweight in their 12-round slugfest early this year, could not believe Khan has a legit shot at fighting Mayweather.

"How do you have someone [like Khan] fight someone who is the best fighter in the world? He has to be an elite fighter. I don't think Amir Khan has earned the right credentials to be in the ring with Mayweather," Diaz said in Boxing Scene via ABS-CBN News.

The Mexican veteran nearly dropped Khan in the fourth round of their welterweight showdown in April, but the Briton held on to a questionable unanimous decision win that night.

According to latest report, Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotion is close to hammering a deal with Mayweather promotions in an attempt to set a clash between Khan and Money May on May 3 in 2014. However, Diaz already predicted an easy win for Mayweather, should the fight happen.

"Look at me, I'm supposedly a washed up fighter, out the door, and look what I did [to Khan] - and after me he comes against Mayweather?" Diaz stressed during the interview.

Then again, Diaz really thinks the Mayweather vs. Khan fight will fare well at the gates and Pay-per-View sales because of Khan's huge fan base in the United Kingdom. The Mexican lauded Golden Boy Promotions for such a nice business move on their part.

"Businesswise, it makes sense because he has a big following. I think Mayweather is looking people who bring something to the table and Khan is one of them, he has that big following in the UK." he said.

Mayweather is expected to announce his next foe in the coming weeks with Khan looming large as the best bet to fight him.

Yet, the emergence of Argentine slugger Marcos Maidana could put Khan's megafight dream in complete jeopardy especially after "Chino" scored a sensational 12-round unanimous decision upset over pound-for-pound fighter Adrien Broner last December 12.
