Following Vitor Belfort's Suggestion of Interim Title, Chris Weidman Promises to 'Embarrass' Opponent
Chris Weidman did not take too kindly the recent comments of rival Vitor Belfort when his supposed challenger suggested that the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) create an interim title given the current injury status of the reigning middleweight king Weidman.
A seething Weidman fired back at Belfort, saying that this just adds fuel to his fire and he will make sure that once they clash in February 2015, he will be out to make a mockery of Belfort.
"I want to toy with him. I want to beat him up standing, I want to toss him on his butt. Smack him in his mouth a couple times while he's on the ground. Maybe go for a submission, make him almost tap, and let go of it, let him stand up, beat him up on the feet, take him down again, just completely just make a mockery of him," Weidman said according to MMA Fighting.
It makes much sense for Weidman to be puzzled by the suggestion as the UFC creates an interim title only when the reigning champion has been sidelined for a minimum of one year. Weidman has last fought only in July and the supposed Belfort fight has been rescheduled from December 2014 to just two months later.
Weidman also pointed out how "the Phenom," has the audacity to bring the matter up when the challenger last fought in November of 2013, a date much later than Weidman's last fight. The man who famously defeated Anderson "The Spider" Silva twice and broke the Brazilian master's leg in the last bout also pointed out how Belfort has failed drug tests and yet has the nerve to call him out on account of a hand injury. Weidman has been speculated by his trainer to have fought Lyoto Machida in July with a broken hand, which puts additional stock to the current champion's rising reputation.
As a parting shot, the Long Island fighter promised that he will embarrass Belfort once they face each other at the Octagon.
