David Beckham, 38, officially retires today from playing football, Daily Mail reports.

Popularly dubbed as Goldenballs, he thinks that now is the perfect timing to announce his retirement after snatching trophies from the French league title with Paris St. Germain.

Beckham has decided to close curtain calls in the peak of his career to spend more time with wife Victoria and their four children.

In an official statement from Beckham, he said that "I'm thankful to PSG for giving me the opportunity to continue but I feel now is the right time to finish my career, playing at the highest level."

"If you had told me as a young boy I would have played for and won trophies with my boyhood club Manchester United, proudly captained and played for my country over one hundred times and lined up for some of the biggest clubs in the world, I would have told you it was a fantasy. I'm fortunate to have realized those dreams."

In an emotional interview with Sky, Beckham says that "I believe it's the right time but I'll always believe I could do more."

With an almost muffled voice brought by outpour of his emotions, he says that he was given the opportunity to play at PSG for another year.

"But I feel now is the right time to call it a day. I love the game so much; I just feel that it is the right time to go. I always feel I can do more, that is the problem. I have been so lucky throughout my career playing for the clubs I have played for and winning the trophies I have won."

He shares that the decision was not easy for him, " I think over the years when I have talked to players who have retired they always say that you'll know when you're ready, and I think I'm ready. Obviously, it's a difficult decision because I still feel I can play at the top level and still have over the last six months."

"I always secretly said to myself I want to go out at the top and if you'd said to me eight months ago you'll be playing in the French league, winning the league, and finishing like this I would have said probably absolutely no chance. I was given the opportunity and I just feel now is the time."

Victoria, on the other hand said that the family is excited about the next chapter of their lives following Beckham's retirement.

"The children and I are so proud of David, it's been incredible journey for us all as we have watched him play at clubs all over the world throughout the last 15 years. Myself and the children have cheered him from the stands, as he has held high trophies with his teams and Manchester United, real Madrid, AC Milan, LA Galaxy and Paris St. Germain."

"This was not an easy decision to make, and to me and the children he will always be an amazing sportsman and a devoted husband and father. He is, and will always remain, a true ambassador for sport and is not just an inspiration to myself and our children but for millions of people worldwide. We are all excited about the next chapter in our lives and the adventures we will explore as a family."

Beckham wants to be remembered as a great football player, more than anything else.
