Forbes 2015 Top 10 Richest Canadians
Forbes has just released its annual list of world billionaires, and in it are 30 Canadians. The country’s top 10 richest continued to be dominated by the same people who occupied the ranks in 2014.
Media magnate and Thomson Reuters chairman David Thomson continued as Canada’s dominant billionaire for 2015. His overall net worth was placed at more than $25 billion. Globally, he is the 25th richest man on earth.
Next is retail and grocery giant Galen Weston, whose family fortune is more than $9 billion, according to Forbes. He is currently the executive chairman of George Weston, the Canadian food and retail giant founded in 1882 by his grandfather. He is the 131st richest man on the global list.
Jim Pattison, founder, chairman and CEO of the Jim Pattison Group, is the 3rd Canadian on the top 10 list. His fortune of $7.5 billion made him snag the 177th spot on the global list. James Irving, owner of his self-named conglomerate, was Canada’s 4th billionaire and the world’s 216th, with a net worth of $6.5 billion.
Canada’s 5th billionaire was Joseph Tsai, Alibaba Group’s vice chairman. Forbes saw him move up four spots from 2014 after the e-commerce company started trading in the U.S., touted as the world’s biggest initial public offering. Worth more than $5 billion, Tsai is the world’s 248th richest man.
Rounding up Canada’s top 10 billionaires were Loretta Robinson with a fortune of $5.8 billion (254th globally), Arthur Irving whose fortune is $5.5 billion (271st globally), Garret Camp which owns a $5.3 billion fortune (283rd globally), Emanuele (Lino) Saputo with a fortune of $4.8 billion (330th globally), and Mark Scheinberg, a holder of $4.1 billion fortune (405th globally). Camp and Scheinberg, aged 36 and 41, respectively, are first-timers on both the Canadian top 10 as well as on the global Forbes’ 2015 list.
The Forbes’ 2015 list of 1,826 billionaires continued to be lorded over by Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates, with a net worth of more than $79 billion. Mexican telecom mogul Carlos Slim Helu is second with a net worth of $77 billion, while Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffet completed this year’s top three, with a net worth of over $72 billion.
