Former U.S. President George H.W. Bush showed his support for same-sex marriage by attending on Saturday the wedding of lesbian couple Helen Thorgalsen, 60, and Bonnie Clement, 55, in Maine.

The newly married couple is from Kennebunkport where the former president and wife Barbara have a compound. Although their mere presence at such a gathering spells a lot of unspoken words, a spokesman for the former first couple said the two attended the private ceremony for two friends as private citizens.

Mr Bush, the 41st president, was in a wheelchair, and wore a suit and his famous blue-and-red socks.

The lesbian couple was able to have their same-sex union legalised after voters in Maine approved in a referendum in November to recognise gay marriages. Maine is one of 13 U.S. states that permit gay marriage which was opposed by Mr Bush's son, former President George W Bush who even announced in 2004 his support for a constitutional amendment to outlaw same-sex marriages.

They flew on Wednesday to London for their honeymoon. The two women have been together for 12 years and have known the Bushes during those dozen years, having included the lesbian pair whenever the former president and first lady were in Kennebunkport.

Ms Thorgalsen posted the pictures of their wedding in Facebook.
