The first week of the 2014 French Open in Roland Garros saw the top seeds in the Women's draw drop like flies. Defending champion Serena Williams and her sister and Venus, who are always favourites in any event, fell out of contention in the second round. Second seed Li Na was also dealt with an upset in the first round as well as former world no. 1. Caroline Wozniacki.

The Serbian duo of Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic were looking to have an all-Serbian final until Ivanovic fell in the hands of Lucie Safarova on Suzanne Lenglen. Safarova will be making a reappearance in the fourth round of the French Open after seven years.

Ivanovic clinched the title in 2008 in a final against Jankovic who is still on her quest to win her first Grand Slam title. She has secured her place in the fourth round this year in a convincing victory against Romanian bet Sorana Cirstea

While looking strong to make it until the end, Jankovic needs to face Sara Errani in the fourth round. Her victory in the third round may have been a walkover, the fourth round match will be a bigger test judging from their most recent meeting which Errani won in Rome only a few weeks ago.

Meanwhile, in a consistent six straight fourth round appearance in a Grand Slam, Sloane Stephens is also looking for a chance to secure her first Grand Slam win. She has so far failed to reach a final unlike Jankovic who has had the bitter experience of losing several.

Time is perhaps running out for the veterans as the younger players seem to have more than just the upper hand in Roland Garros this year. Eugenie Bouchard, born in 1994,is the youngest player in the fourth round, and was the first to secure her quarter-final berth.

In another early fourth round match, Maria Sharapova, the seventh seed is the only favourite still in contention but is not exactly breezing through either. She had to overcome being a set down and trailing 3-4 to Sam Stosur before she got a second wind and soldiered on to win in three sets.

Sharapova has always performed well in Roland Garros and after having won in 2012 and losing to Serena Williams last year, she will be looking to reclaim the title in her straight Roland Garros final. It's only just the beginning of the second week and a long way to go but Sharapova is always one to keep an eye out for.
