Maria Sharapova seems to be running on a Diesel engine in this year's French Open in Roland Garros. The Russian superstar survived another scare and sat on the brink of defeat before advancing to the semi-final round.

In an Earlier match against Australia's Sam Stosur to get to the quarter finals, Sharapova lost the first set 6-3 before findng her footing and eventually taking the next two sets at 6-4,6-0.

Booking her place into the Semi finals was a bit more intense as she fought hard against Garbine Muquruza of Spain who is out to gain a giant killer reputation after taking out defending champion Serena Williams in the second round.

Muquruza took the early lead and won the first set easily with a 6-1 score line. Things did not look up for Sharapova in the second set as the two women exchanged points and Sharapova found herself down 5-4 in the second set and on the brink of elimination.

In the third set, a more confident Sharapova took control and never gave it back to Muquruza. The Spaniard had five breakpoint chances which she was unable to convert.

Sharapova will be facing Eugenie Bouchard in the semi-finals after Bouchard took out Carla Suarez Navarro also in three sets. The Canadian will be making her first French Open semi final appearance after being an up and coming player for some time.

2014 is a breakthrough year for Bouchard who also made it to the Australian Open semi finals this year where she lost to Li Na. She has so far had a ten match winning streak on clay including her run to the Nurnberg title just before the French Open

Sharapova is Bouchard's childhood idol but she insists that she won't be intimidated by the 2012 French Open champion.

"For sure I respect her. But now we're in the semis of a Grand Slam, so I'm going to respect her but not put her too high on a pedestal and really just battle," she said during her post-match interview. Bouchard is the first Canadian to reach a Roland Garros semi final and she will be doing her best to do one better and be the first one to win it as well.
