The Filipina businesswoman accused of being the brains behind the P10 billion pork barrel scam, Janet Lim-Napoles, surrendered on Wednesday night to Philippine President Benigno Aquino III at 9:37 p.m.

She showed up just hours after the president announced a P10 million reward for her capture.

Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said the president turned over the controversial businesswoman to Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas and Philippine National Police Director-General Alan Purisima for processing and booking as part of the surrender conditions.

Lorna Kapunan, the lawyer of Ms Lim-Napoles, said her client had actually planned to surrender to Manila Archbishop Jose Antonio Cardinal Tagle even before the Million People March rally on Monday, Aug 26, but the cardinal did not respond.

Besides being suspected as the brains behind the pork barrel scam by opening fake NGOs where funds of politicians are channeled, Ms Lim-Napoles and her brother, Reynaldo Lim, are also wanted for serious illegal detention filed by Benhur Luy, the whistleblower of the scam.

The public uproar over the abuse by lawmakers of the pork barrel fund led Mr Aquino to abolish it, but he put up the Priority Development Assistance Fund which critics say is just the same pork barrel fund with a new name.

The businesswoman and her family are believed to be in Camp Crame where the PNP's office is located. Ms Kapunan said her client decided to surrender for fear of her life after the P10 million bounty offered by the president for her capture.

Because of the public fury over her flaunting of wealth in social media believed to have come from the pork barrel funds, the businesswoman was the subject of several viral memes that indicate public anger over the issue.
