Queensland residents severely affected by the worst flooding in decades are urged to seek assistance via the Australian Government’s Disaster Recovery Payment.

Acting Attorney-General Brendan O’Connor said the payment of $1000 for each eligible adult and $400 for each eligible child is designed to assist people who were forced to leave their homes, have lost their homes or whose homes have sustained major damage as a result of the floods.

“The floods crisis in Queensland is easing in some areas, but worsening in others,” O’Connor said.“The Australian Government’s Disaster Recovery Payment is available for communities across all 41 local government areas in Queensland that have been declared natural disaster zones."

“It’s one part of the hundreds of millions of dollars the Australian Government is providing in response to the flood," he added.“In addition, there are a range of other payments and grants available for businesses, primary producers and residents to help them get back on their feet.”

Minister for Human Services, Tanya Plibersek says:" People can call the Australian Government’s Emergency Assistance Hotline on 180 2266, between 8am-8pm Queensland time, visit their local Centrelink or Medicare Office or speak with Centrelink staff at their local Community Recovery Center".

She adds:“In Bundaberg and Chinchilla, Centrelink staff are processing claims in community recovery centres while in Dalby, they are operating from the Centrelink office.“

“Centrelink staff in Dalby and Chinchilla are accompanying Queensland Government officials on outreach visits to isolated people, while Centrelink social workers are also on the ground in Emerald to provide support and will be travelling to other affected areas in coming days.”
