'Game Of Thrones' Actor Kit Harington Admits To Being Hungover On Set, Compares Work With Hogwarts
Kit Harington is the man of the moment. Playing Jon Snow in the HBO fantasy drama series "Game Of Thrones" has thrust the young British actor into the spotlight. After four seasons, his career has flourished.
He admits that coming into the set of "Game of Thrones" as a 20-something young actor felt like going to Hogwarts for him, and he used to arrive on set with a massive hangover. "Game of Thrones" airs for only about three months a year but the spotlight doesn't go dim in between. Harington, who plays the soft-spoken bastard son of a lord has captured the sympathy and admiration of the audience. His character has endured much, but he remains steadfast in the righteous path. Even the way he broke his vow of celibacy to hot-headed Ygritte made him look vulnerable and adorable as opposed to weak and disobedient.
The real-life man behind Jon Snow, however, is not as prim and proper as his onscreen counterpart. In a recent interview with the London Evening Standard, Harington shared how he used to come to the set with hangovers. He likened working on the series to going ito Hogwarts because he had so many co-actors in the cast whom he knew from acting school.
"Me and Alfie [Allen] and Emilia [Clarke], we've all grown up together and we're all so excited about being in it," he said. Harington explained further that he and his friends enjoyed working together but ended up having too much fun. In the first season, he would arrive hungover until he decided to put an end to it because he knew there could be consequences.
"Hangovers show on camera, there's no makeup in the world that can cover that up. You've got to be pretty self-disciplined to not get into trouble with the producers," he said while comparing filming with acting in theatre. He said that in his experience on stage, there was time to recover in contrast to acting on screen.
Allen plays Theon Greyjoy who was the ward of Jon Snow's father, and they grew up together in the same castle in the story. Clarke plays Daenerys Targaryen, the exiled daughter of the ousted King. She plans to return to Westeros to claim her rightful place on the throne. All three characters are so far still alive in season 5, allowing more responsible fun to be had among the three friends.
