‘Game of Thrones’ Making of the Red Wedding Behind-the-Scenes [Watch Video]
The "Game of Thrones" Season 3 episode 9, The Rains of Castamere was difficult to watch for many viewers who had not read the books. In this video the producers share how important the scene was and how difficult it was for them to make it.
Perhaps the shock value of the Red Wedding was what prompted the producers to get involved with the "Game of Thrones" project. The producers share how both Richard Madden, who plays Robb Stark and Michelle Fairley, who plays Catelyn Stark, had become like family at the sets.
The importance of Richard's portrayal of Robb can be gauged by the fact that the character got more scenes written in the "Game of Thrones" TV series than what was found in the books. The producers however had the Red Wedding at the back of their minds right from the day one of the first season.
The Red Wedding was not only an emotional scene for the viewers but also for the producers. One of the main characters who are seen regularly on the sets from the first season would suddenly not be there anymore!
The Red Wedding in "Game of Thrones" Season 3 was so shocking to the viewers because many expected Robb to emerge as the hero who will avenge his father's death. The murder of his pregnant wife also took a heavy emotional toll on the viewers.
The scene did not end quickly but dragged on, adding to the pain that many viewers experienced. When Catelyn made one final appeal to Walder Frey with a knife at her hostage's throat there was a glimmer of hope for a moment, but that too vanished when Walder Frey refused the offer flat.
Perhaps "Game of Thrones" is a popular series because the good and the righteous may not necessarily triumph, which adds to the suspense. The honest and upright Ned Stark had his head chopped off whereas the cruel and cowardly Joffrey became king.
There is a wedding planned in the upcoming "Game of Thrones" Season 4 between king Joffrey and Margaery Tyrell. The fans are calling it the Purple Wedding with some hoping that they don't play the Rains of Castamere at the wedding while others hope that they do!
Another aspect of the "Game of Thrones" series is that important characters tend to die from time to time. There are some big names who may fall in the season 4 too and the viewers just hope that their favourite character does not die!
