‘Game of Thrones’ star Maisie Williams backs Idris Elba as the next ‘Doctor Who’
Idris Elba for the next “Doctor Who!” Maisie Williams has backed the 43-year-old “The Wire” actor to become the next Gallifreyan Time Lord when Peter Capaldi bows down in the future. Or if Elba isn’t available, Williams herself is up for it.
There have been rumours that Capaldi will be leaving the series after the 10th season ends in 2017 to coincide with showrunner Steven Moffat’s exit. And when that happens, the producers need to search for a new Time Lord (or Lady).

A few names have popped up, with Elba being one of the strong contenders. If it’s up to Williams, it’s about time a black actor gets to fly the Tardis.
“I think a black doctor would be incredible. I’m all for Idris Elba – but if not, I’ll take it for the team and do it!” the 18-year-old “Game of Thrones” star told Evening Standard. She also said that the Doctor regenerating into a woman next would be “incredible.”
Williams as the next Doctor would be amazing as well, but there’s just one problem: she already played a notable role in the recent season. She had a four-episode arc in season nine as Ashildr, a human girl who was implanted with Mire technology by the Doctor, and therefore making her immortal.
As the season ender saw her travelling time and space with Clara (Jenna Coleman) in their own Tardis, it’s likely she could be back for future episodes.
Moreover, the teen actress, who has been named Rising Star at the Evening Standard British Film Awards for the year, has projects lined up. Her role as Arya Stark in “Game of Thrones” is still ongoing, and she’s also starring in the upcoming film, “The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea” with Jason Sudeikis and Jessica Biel.
Apart from Elba, several high-profile stars have been mentioned by fans as the next possible Doctor Who. This list includes Tim Roth, “Sherlock” star Benedict Cumberbatch, “Harry Potter” actor Rupert Grint, James McAvoy, Richard Ayoade, and even Williams’ fellow “Game of Thrones” actor, Richard Madden. As for fans who are ready for a female incarnation of the Doctor, they have been suggesting “Agent Carter” star Hayley Atwell and Lara Pulver’s names.
“Doctor Who” will have only one episode aired this 2016, the Christmas special. Season 10 will resume and conclude in 2017. “Broadchurch” creator Chris Chibnall will take over the helm from Moffat after the next season.
