‘Game Of Thrones’ Star Maisie Williams To Give ‘Doctor Who’ ‘Hell’
Arya Stark will be meeting the Doctor soon. “Game of Thrones” actress Maisie Williams will be starring in the upcoming season of “Doctor Who” to give 12th Doctor Peter Capaldi “just the right sort of hell.”
BBC announced Williams’ guest role in the show on Monday but did not disclose what character she will be playing. It’s possible that the 17-year-old actress will be in for a multiple episode-arc, but again, exec producer Steven Moffat’s lips are sealed. He did reveal, however, that Williams’ character will challenge the recalcitrant Time Lord.
“We’re thrilled to have Maisie Williams joining us on Doctor Who,” Moffat said in a statement. “It’s not possible to say too much about who or what she’s playing, but she is going to challenge the Doctor in very unexpected ways. This time he might just be out of his depth, and we know Maisie is going to give him exactly the right sort of hell.”
Williams is also excited about her role. “I can’t wait to meet the cast and crew and start filming, especially as we’ll be shooting not too far from my home town,” the Bristol native actress said. Series 9 is filming in Cardiff.
With details of her guest role kept vague, Whovians can only guess how Williams’ character will meet Capaldi’s Doctor and current companion Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman). She could play a villain, but the most popular theory is she will be a one-time companion, similar to the roles other popular actresses have played in the show. Many one-time companions have left lasting impressions on viewers.
Remember Sally Sparrow? Sally, played by then-emerging star Carey Mulligan, helped Tenth Doctor David Tennant and companion Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman) reunite with the Tardis after the Weeping Angels sent them back in time without the blue box. The episode, titled “Blink,” was well received by the viewers and had won a Hugo Award in 2008.
There’s also Astrid Perth, played by Australian superstar Kylie Minogue. Viewers thought for a second that Minogue would replace Martha as the Doctor’s companion since she entered the Time Lord’s life just after Martha left him. Needless to say, Minogue’s character was only meant to be in one episode.
Back to Williams, the very busy young lady just came fresh from her U.S. tour when she set foot inside the Tardis on Monday for her “Doctor Who” commitment. She was also in London in February for the world premiere of the fifth series of “Game of Thrones,” where she plays the headstrong Arya Stark. The HBO fantasy series will kick off its season on April 12.
