Tywin Lannister is one the most prominent characters in Geroge R. R. Martin's "Game of Thrones". Viewers take different sides on whether to love or hate the head of the Lannister family. In the book of "A song of Ice and Fire", Tywinn Lannister is one of the most important figures in Westeros to shape the story.

The Lannisters are so rich in the world of Westeros because they are in charge of the "West" and its gold mines. The Lannisters were leaders of the West for 10,000 years before they surrendered to Targaryen rule. After which they were made wardens of the West.

Fun fact about the Lannisters

The Lannisters is the only house in the "Seven Kingdoms" that wasn't honored with Valyrian steel swords. Having a valyrian steel is like a status symbol in Westeros. In olden days, even Tywin's older brother attempted to acquire Valyrian steel and sailed to an island in the East. But Tywinn's older brother failed and was never heard of again. The only time the Lannisters ever possessed a Valyrian steel is when they took Ned Stark's sword called "Ice" and later divided it into two.

The history of the Lannisters started with Tywin's father, Tytos "The Toohtless Lion" Lannister. Tytos almost ruined the Lannister name. He inspired no fear in his bannermen and everyone didn't respect him. Also, Tytos was a laughingstock by the people around him. In the show, one reason why Tywin is portrayed with such serious attitude and composure is because of his experience growing up in his father's legacy. Tywin hated laughter ever since.

According to the books, Tytos was a soft and lenient king. There was one time when a rebellion was cast against the Lannisters reign. Tywin, coming of age, asked his father to lead the defense against the rebellion. To everyone's surprise, Tywin murdered and crushed all the rebels into literal extinction. The legend of his actions that day was so great that the song "Rains of Castamere" was created in his name. Years passed, and Tytos eventually died a miserable death, and Tywin took over the House.

Tywin was serious to pick up from his father's lousy reign. He took upon himself the task of restoring their family name. In the story, Tywin is a great tactician, battle and strategic-wise warrior yet suffers a downside of poorly handling his own children.

In the books, it is already Tywin's second time being "Hand of the King". His first time handling the position was when he served as King's Hand to Aerys Targaryen's reign.

Tywin was only 20 years old when he first became Hand of the King.

Then came a time when conflict arose between the"Mad King" Aerys and Tywin. The Mad king grew jealous over Tywin's good governance in Seven Kingdoms. From there a lot of bad events happened. One time, the Mad King went to the nearby town of "Duskendale" to cut off its lord's head for not paying taxes. The Mad King was captured instead and Tywin came to rescue immediately. After the Mad king was freed, Aerys was rather ungrateful and scolded him for taking too long.

The last greatest issue between the two is when Aerys made Jaime Lannister member of the "Kingsguard" therefore robbing Tywin of an heir. This made Tywin quit and return to Casterly Rock, home of the Lannisters. When the "War of the Usurper" broke out, Tywin seized the opportunity to have his revenge. He tricked the Mad King that he and his army came to support. Granted entry in King's Landing, Tywin and his army then sacked the city and eventually triumped against Aerys Targaryen.

Tywin drew a lot of hate from the people of Westeros when he ordered the murder of Elia Martell of Dorne (Prince Rhaegar's wife and Oberyn Martell's sister), and got rid of all Targaryen people.

Tywin Lannister did many terrible things to secure his family's power and he is bent on protecting the House Lannister at all cost.
