Game of Thrones' Valar Morghulis, the second season finale, had fans and viewers on opposite ends of reviews. Some were totally satisfied; others were disgruntled for not getting enough.

The division did not result from a poor finale. In fact, it may just be the opposite.

Game of Thrones is watched by a vast variety of audience. Some people watch it for the epic battles, or the anticipation thereof; others follow each episode for the characters's personal journeys. It is safe to assume that those who read George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire are following the TV series, too. And they, too, got enthralled by the books for different reasons.

Blackwater was a visual spectacle, it packed all the action in one memorable Memorial Day weekend and was delivered with brilliant special effects. On the other hand, Valar Morghulis was dished out to give viewers something else. It was not "more of visuals," but it was "something more."

It is hard to rank the best parts of this finale. Was it Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) sobbing? How can you discount the surprise appearance of Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa) for his widow Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke)? And then there was the quiet oft-concealed affection and respect shared by Theon (Alfie Allen) and Master Luwin (Donald Sumpter). All these scenes tug at the heartstrings. Those who follow the individual journeys of the characters in the series would find these scenes heartbreaking and as such, more than satisfying.

As all season finales do, Valar Morghulis sets the stage for Game of Thrones Season 3, but fans will have to be really patient because it's still several months away. On the other hand, those who have not read the book now have enough time to catch up.

Game of Thrones gets an average of ten million viewers weekly, and it is now ranked as the third most watched HBO series of all time.
