Gaming News: Sega Studios Australia Slated to Shut Down; Wii U Misses Aliens: Colonial Marines but Gets a Hit with Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
Following the news on the shuttering down of LucasArts last week, Sega Studios Australia has also officially announced that it will be closing down later this year.
According to Develop, the Brisbane-based studio had already had 40 layoffs last February to become a smaller studio, in the hopes of better functioning and production.
The layoffs came after the London 2012 title was finished, and the studio had decided to shift to the digital platform, reports IGN.
"The rise of digital gaming provides an opportunity to align the studio with a rapidly growing market at a time when the games industry is undergoing a significant transition," according to the official statement as quoted from IGN.
"The decision to downsize was not taken lightly but this strategic re-structure will ensure we have a more effective and agile team that will enable us to quickly adapt to consumer needs and deliver strong content across multiple digital platforms."
Whether or not the restructuring turned out for the worse, but when Sega Studios Australia finishes the closing plans, it will be the last of the triple-A development in Australia, which brings the future of gaming development in Australia to murky territory.
Wii U gets a hit and a miss
It's an up and down week for Wii U as news of the cancellation for the Wii U version of Alien: Colonial Marines.
There has been no reason for the cancellation, only an official statement made by Sega to GameSpot, "Sega can confirm that the Wii U sku of Aliens: Colonial Marines is no longer in development."
The Wii U version has been slated for a March release, with most people assuming that the company has just missed a deadline.
But given the many bleak and unenthusiastic reviews that the actual game has been getting for its PS3 and Xbox 360 version, it might not be too much of a loss, even if the Wii U is tagged to be the best version for Aliens: Colonial Marines.
In other news, Wii U isn't suffering from such a bad week as it gets a bestseller in Europe via Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate.
In fact, the sales of the game have been so strong in Europe that Nintendo is currently experiencing a shortage in stock of the game, reports Digital Trends.
"I'd like to apologize for the current stock shortage due to high demand of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate at retail," said Nintendo of Europe Satoru Shibata to Digital Trends.
"New Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate stock will hopefully be available in shops next week for Wii U and mid-April for Nintendo 3DS.
This is a great confidence booster for the Wii U, given how badly the sales have dipped in the first months of the year. But the next question now is whether or not it can deliver on the stock shortage issues--and fast, so it won't lose any more sales or credibility for its newfound followers.
