Gay Ambassador Director John Berry Ties The Knot With Long Time Partner
U.S. Gay Ambassador to Australia Director John Berry has widely promoted marriage equality by tying the knot with his long-term partner, Curtis Yee, of 17 years, in Washington, D.C.
Director John Berry is known to have been the very first openly gay ambassador who served a Group of 20 nation and holds the position of being the highest ranked gay in the entire history of the United States.
Mr Berry made a simple statement confirming the nuptials that was held in a private same-sex ceremony. It was at St Margaret's Episcopal Church. He added that music was rendered by Dr Theodore Guerrant along with a soloist by the name of Christian Hoff. The only attendants were close friends and families which included the Department of Interior head.
Director John Berry joins the list of other openly gay ambassadors like David Huebner who is the US ambassador to Samoa and New Zealand. Even when he is still yet to arrive in the land of Down Under to fulfill his new role, he has received praises already from AME campaigners. Supporters of marriage equality in Australia hope to apply the same gay marriage evolution that has transpired in the US.
AME convener Rodney Croome also extended his warmest greetings to the newly wed couple. Mr Croome added that he wishes the two well for their married life together in the future, but he cannot help but be sad for the couple being just one of the many same-sex marriages not recognised under the Australian law.
Ambassador John Berry's hubby, Curtis Yee, used to work as a lawyer and a native of Hawaii. He is also set to join the director in Australia.
It was in June when U.S. President Barack Obama nominated Mr Berry for the position of U.S. Ambassador of Australia when Jeffrey Bleich stepped down from the same spot. The former ambassador only had good things to say too about Mr Berry. He described him as a "talented and dedicated public servant" whom he know will do well in building stronger U.S.-Australian relationship.
And just how Mr Bleich hoped things will turn out well for Director John Berry, the U.S. Senate certainly acted in favour of his nomination.
Congratulations Ambassador John Berry and Curtis Yee!
