Equality in marriage was the dominant theme of the annual Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade
Various interest groups and individuals who participated at the annual Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras with the highlight of the celebration held at Sydney last night. Sequins, frocks and lycra were a common sight at the streets in Sydney as the parade combed through the city streets.
According to the Australian Associated Press, equality in marriage had been the overriding theme of the parade as can be seen in at least 15 out of 100 floats that participated in the annual event.
The parade would not be complete without the pairs of brides and grooms seen along with revelers who took to the street in their colorful attires for the evening which are mostly in costumes as cheerleaders, nuns and vampires.
One of the participating groups that had dominated the parade is the float by the Australian Marriage Equality Now float with images and caricatures of two equality opponents: Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott. Abbott is the parliament’s leader of the opposition Liberal Party.
In hopes to express dismay over the political leaders opposing stance on the issue, The Australian Marriage Equality Now float, noted the AAP portrayed Gillard wearing a wedding dress while Abbott was paraded in a brief bathing suit.
The theme calling for equality in Marriage stem from the “Say Something” campaign earlier launched in Australia urging Australians speak out and voice their thoughts on same-sex marriage.
American actress, Lily Tomlin said AAP has helped the parade by campaigning for gay rights in the country.
