For the first time since being traded to Toronto, Rudy Gay will be playing against his former club at Memphis when his Raptors visit the Grizzlies on Wednesday night.

Just like when he was with Memphis, Gay is the scoring leader for Toronto and has averages of 19.3 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.9 steals in eight games so far. Despite the efforts from the 7-year pro, Toronto is 3-5 to start the season and has lost four of their last five games.

One of those losses includes an overtime 110-104 loss to the Houston Rockets where the Raptors trailed by 14 points in the fourth quarter but found a way to force the extra period.

Gay paced the Raps with 29 points but was an inefficient 11-of-37 from the field. DeMar DeRozan added 22 points and 3 steals while Jonas Valanciunas (10 points and 13 rebounds) and Amir Johnson (10 points and 11 rebounds) both had double-doubles

Even without Gay, the Grizzlies were very successful last season. Memphis went all the way to the Western Conference Finals before getting swept by the San Antonio Spurs in that round. However, the Grizzlies are off to a bad start in 2013, alternating losses and wins for a measly 4-5 record.

Memphis is coming from a disappointing performance against the Indiana Pacers, who dominated them on both ends of the floor for a 95-79 final score. The Grizz shot poorly from the field (41.3 per cent), from the free throw line (68.4 per cent) and was outrebounded by the Pacers, 45-32.

Memphis has won and covered the spread in last season’s meeting with Toronto. The Grizzlies have also won eight of their last 9 games vs. the Raptors.
