Germany's Olympic officials insist that their newly introduced team uniform for the Sochi Winter Olympics in Russia is just being fashionable. However, with its rainbow theme, it appears the uniforms are a jab at host country Russia's anti-gay policy.
The uniform has the same bright, rainbow colours used by the gay rights movement.
Michael Vesper, a German Olympic official, said the uniforms "were created using colors and materials especially tailored to the conditions in Sochi."
Sochi, Russia's largest resort city, has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters. The average temperature is 11 degrees Celsius at daytime and 4 degrees Celsius at night from December to March, while summers are warmer, averaging 24 at day and 16 at night. Sochi's summer is from May to October.
Besides hosting the XX11 Olympic Winter Games and XI Paralympic Winter Games in 2014, Sochi will be one of the host cities for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
The approval by the Russian Parliament in June 2013 of a law that prohibits gay propaganda to minors has created controversy, and some groups are pushing for the boycott of the winter games next year.
However, using creativity like the way Germany's Olympic, national contingents could cleverly get away and state their stand on gay rights in a fashionable way without risking arrest by the Russian police.
Other Germans instead took to the streets to protest Russia's anti-gay policy.
