Get to Know the Australian Sevens Squad’s Performances at the Commonwealth Games

The Australian Rugby Sevens squad has participated in the Commonwealth Games after its introduction in 1998. Even though Australia has never won a gold medal, it has fared well in the tournament winning two medals, one bronze and one silver.

Australia has won a bronze medal in the first Commonwealth Games. Former Sevens and Wallabies star David Campese was a key player that has helped Australia bag the bronze medal against Samoa in the Plate Final.

In the second Commonwealth Games held in Manchester, Australia lost to the host nation's team and earned a sixth place finish.

Australia hosted that Commonwealth Games in 2006. According to reports, it was the biggest sporting event to be held in Melbourne. The games were staged in 13 venues including the famous Rod Laver Arena. The Rugby Sevens' matches were held at the Dockland Stadium. Australia finished fourth behind New Zealand, England, and Fiji.

The highest achievement that the squad has achieved was during the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India after the squad won the silver medal led by Bernard Foley, Pat McCabe, and returning players Liam Gill and James Stannard.

Twenty-one men with ages ranging from 20 years old to 31 years old who all came from different Australian states comprise the current troop, namely, Paul Asquith, Cameron Clark, Thomas Cusack, Allan Fa'alava'au, Con Foley, Pama Fou, Alex Gibson, Liam Gill, Lewis Holland, Greg Jeloudev, Ed Jenkins, Tom Lucas, Nick Malouf, Sean McMahon, Sam Myers, Afa Pakalani, Jesse Parahi, Peter Schuster, James Stannard, Lausii Taliauli, and Shannon Walker.

The preliminary matches will take place on July 26. Australia will face Sri Lanka and Uganda on the same day at Ibrox Stadium, as reported on Rugby.com.au. Then the squad will battle England on July 27. The semi-final and medal matches will take place on July 27.
