Gillard gives out federal reliefs for Queensland flood victims
The federal government is extending its assistance on Queenslanders affected by the heavy rains and flooding that deluded the state, the worst flooding incident seen in Queensland for almost half a century, according to experts.
As thousands from across Queensland were forced out from their homes, Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced on Monday that federal funds would be provided to disaster victims, which they can utilise for their immediate needs.
An ABC report said that Ms Gillard is earmarking payments of $1000 for adult victims and $400 for kids affected by the deluge, which federal authorities have assured would be released on Tuesday.
The government said that as of January 3, 41 local governments in Queensland has been flagged as affected areas and the federal payments would be coordinated through local officials though federal direct lines have been provided for people wishing to contact the national government.
Ms Gillard said that federal assistance could run as high as $4980 to cover for household goods lost in the flood and another $13,800 to fund for necessary home repairs.
Business owners and crop and livestock producers affected by the rains and flooding are also entitled to some $25,000 to soften their losses and help them start over, according to the prime minister.
Also, farmers and businessmen would be given options to avail of concessional loans that could reach $250,000 while Ms Gillard gave assurances to the Queensland government that federal efforts would be active in rebuilding infrastructures and facilities damaged by the heavy rains.
The federal government has acknowledged that damages in Queensland could run to a high of million-dollar costs but Ms Gillard comforted Queenslanders by assuring that "hundreds of millions of dollars are going to flow into Queensland to help deal with these circumstances."
The prime minister also ordered the Australian Defence Force to help out in the flood-relief works and a coordinating post has been established in Brisbane as staging centre for such military efforts.
