Gillard Won Over Kevin Rudd for Labor Leadership
The national Labor Leadership ballot has revealed Julia Gillard being the winner. She has gained 71 votes compared to Mr. Rudd's 31 votes according to the announcement made by Chris Hayes, party returning officer.
The leadership challenge that went on for 30 years has regarded Gillard's win as the biggest so far.
The announcement of the winner was held at the Canberra's Parliament House during a meeting that was attended by 102 caucus members. Ms. Gillard's supporter, NSW MP Michelle Rowland, was not present during the meeting.
Mr. Rudd gave up his position as the foreign minister last Wednesday. He said he would fight for the leadership after his return in Australia this coming Friday.
He admitted he wasn't glad about the Monday election, but despite that, he would continue to challenge for leadership for he considered himself the only person who has the capability to run Labor winning over Tony Abbott.
Mr. Rudd has decided not to fight again until the next election. He would be pleased to offer his support instead.
The voting process, which started later than 10:10 a.m. AEDT, was proclaimed at around 11:20 a.m. Analyzers took time to indicate names according to Mr. Hayes.
The prime minister received a round of applause during the meeting.
When Mr. Hayes was asked about Mr. Rudd's feeling regarding the result, he answered Mr. Rudd appeared to be fine.
After the result of the ballot was declared, everybody was clapping. Mr. Hayes said he has observed a relief look from the senators and other members.
According to Mr. Hayes, Mr. Rudd will be supporting Ms. Gillard.
Mr. Rudd's comment regarding the result of the ballot was focused on working for a united Labor team. MP Dick Adams agreed with Mr. Rudd's idea and added that he would be one of Julia's supporters.
