‘Girl Meets World’ cancellation may be due to comparisons with “Boy Meets World”
“Girl Meets World” has been officially cancelled by Disney Channel after three seasons composing of 69 episodes. Fans are left wondering why the network has opted to cancel the show and possible reasons could be the drop in its ratings and constant comparisons with its predecessor, '90s ABC sitcom “Boy Meets World,” which might have hurt the series.
The first episode of “Girl Meets World” had been a huge hit with a stellar 5.16 million viewers. However, there was a significant drop in the show’s ratings during “Girl Meets World” season 3. The third season only had an average of 1.5 million viewers.
Forbes has noted that there is a possibility that the constant comparisons to “Boy Meets World” may have hurt the follow-up series. To some viewers, “Girl Meets World’ may not be as humourous or entertaining as its predecessor.
Both shows have been created for a certain demographic and present moral lessons in every episode. But “Boy Meets World” has been more about a boy finding love while “Girl Meets World” is more about friendships.
And since “Boy Meets World” is more suitable for mature audiences, it had the chance to present more mature events, unlike in “Girl Meets World,” which is meant for young viewers. It was a show meant for Disney Channel audience, a young group of viewers. “Girl Meets World” is simply a tween show with tween humour.
But for avid “Girl Meets World” fans, the show is worthy of a fourth season. Disney Channel will no longer air episodes of the show but there is a possibility that the series will be picked up by a different network.
Show creator Michael previously revealed that they are having talks with other networks for the series to be picked up for more episodes. The confirmation regarding the show’s renewal may happen sooner rather than later.
Earlier this year, fans have come up with the Paper Airplanes campaign to save the show. Jacobs said he himself agrees that the show should not have been cancelled in its third season as it has more stories to tell.
The follow-up series has centred on the life of Riley Matthews (Rowan Blanchard), the daughter of original series characters Cory (Ben Savage) and Topanga (Danielle Fishel). As the lead character faces the stage of adolescence, she meets friends along the way. “Girl Meets World” aired in Australia through Disney Channel.
