Glee Season 2 star Jane Lynch spoke about coming out twice about her sexual orientation, which she once thought was a kind of disease during her teenage years. Lynch went on an interview with It Gets Better Project video creator Dan Savage, on Newsweek.

"I had two coming outs. I came out when I was about 21, and then I came out to my family when I was 32. By the time I was 32 they were like, 'Well, we knew there was something. We're glad to know what it is, now let's move on,'" Jane Lynch tells Jessica Bennett for Newsweek's The Interview Issue.

Lynch was born in Illinois to an Irish Catholic family. She has portrayed lesbian characters onscreen, starting with her breakthrough role in Best in Show as a butch personal dog trainer back in 2000. Five years later, she was named as 10 Amazing Gay Women in Showbiz by Power Up.

"Had I told them when I was 18 it would have been a different story, because there was nobody openly homosexual. I thought it was a disease. I remember hearing the word 'gay' and thinking, 'Oh, my God, I have that.'"

At present, she can be seen as the cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester in the musical show Glee Season 2, for which she earned an Emmy particularly for her performance in The Power of Madonna episode. Incidentally, the episode she submitted for consideration tackles female empowerment as its theme.
