GM's Opel to launch as a stand-alone brand in Australia next year
General Motors Co.'s Opel unit says it plans to start exporting cars to Australia in 2012. Among the models confirmed for Australia will be the Insignia, new Astra and the recently upgraded Corsa. The complete vehicle range and dealer network will be announced closer to next year's launch.
Speaking at the 2011 North American International Auto Show in Detroit today, CEO Nick Reilly said that the Australian launch "is an important part of our international expansion strategy."
Holden Chairman and Managing Director Mike Devereux said "Opel will be sold as a stand-alone brand in Australia for the first time in 2012, but Australian drivers have a strong affinity with Opel vehicles like Astra which were previously sold under the Holden brand.
"Opel presents a new opportunity for GM in Australia with a growing demand for German design and technology at affordable prices."
"We look forward to supporting our sister brand establish itself as a strong competitor in the growing premium European segment," Mr Devereux said.
GM nearly sold a majority stake in its European operations in 2009, but subsequently decided to hold onto and restructure Opel and sister brand Vauxhall.
Holden spokeswoman Emma Watts said the premium brand would definitely launch in Australia in 2012, although specific timing was still to be determined.
