The extraordinary feats of the Australian gold medal winning women's water polo team at the 2000 Sydney Olympics have been further recognised during a presentation ceremony at the Water Polo Pan Pacs in Melbourne.

The team was presented with the Team Sport Australia Award by the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in front of a packed crowd ahead of last night's marquee match between the Aussie Stingers and the USA.

Robert Lay from the Sport Australia Hall of Fame said it was great to see another of Australia's amazing sporting teams to be elevated to this fantastic achievement.

"The 2000 Olympic gold medal team are the first water polo team to be recognised at this level and it is a significant milestone for the sport," Lay said.

"We are delighted to have the girls added to the list of Australia's most famous sporting identities and it highlights the great role they have played in keeping the country's great sporting history alive."

Team member Naomi Castle was on hand to receive the award with all thirteen members of the squad set to receive individual certificates.

The Australian girls became the darlings of the 2000 games after they pulled off a remarkable last minute victory over the USA.

In further, presentations Glencora Ralph, Rowie Webster and Nicola Zagame all received pewter mugs after notching one hundred test matches for the Stingers in the past month.
