Gold Coast Boy Bernard Tomic Advances, Victoria Azarenka Crashes Out Of The Brisbane International
Bernard Tomic, 22, and world number 53 upset the odds to beat a much higher ranked opponent Sam Querrey of the United States of America, ranked 35, to set by an all Australia second round clash. Earlier in the day Victoria Azarenka crashed out of the Brisbane International in the very first round after losing a three hour marathon match against Karolina Pliskova.
The late match at the Pat Rafter Arena was all about Tomic who quickly set the tempo of the match by settling into his stride. He served 20 aces to win the match 7-5, 7-6 (5). "The first set, he was playing very good, I got my chance when he was serving for the first set. I took it and played very good tennis from 5-4 down and played really confident in the second", Tomic said wonderfully explaining the rudiments of this match.
Earlier in the day a South Australian teenager qualifier Thanasi Kokkinakis also made it to the second round by beating Julien Benneteau of France 6-4, 6-3. The two Australian boys will meet each other in the second round.
The upset of the day happened in an earlier match at the Pat Rafter Arena. Belarusian Victoria Azarenka was beaten in three sets by Karolina Pliskova of Czech Republic. Azarenka, who has won the Australian Open twice and is a former world number one, was making a comeback from an injury layoff.
She looked fit and strong and took the first set 6-4. In the second set things got considerably difficult for her. Pliskova did not let Azarenka settle with her power tennis and big first serves. The Czech girl saved a couple of match points before dragging the game to a tiebreaker. Pliskova won the tiebreaker and the second set 7-6 (7).
Azarenka rushed into the dressing room after the end of the second set and appeared much fresher at the beginning of the third. Unfortunately for her Pliskova was now in complete control of the game and won the third set comfortably 6-4.
