A Los Angeles doctor warned males against the current trend, especially among gang members, to gold plate their genitals. Dr Ian Jefferson from the LA Community Hospital observed that the procedure is becoming more popular among gang members in California.

The procedure could be fatal, as what happened to Nazario Conchuza Gonzales, a 17-year-old member of the Ms-13 gang who is a migrant from El Salvador. Gonzales died from complications last week after he stole a professional automotive gold plater from a garage and performed the gold plating on his private parts himself, reports Elite Readers.

Gonzales’s alias in the gang was “Pelotas de oro” which means golden testicles. He decided to live to that name as a birthday gift to himself for his 17th natal day.

He initially used lead-based paint to colour gold his genital. The youth was imitating a bad guy character from the parody movie Goldmember who colours gold the private parts of his male victim. The movie’s lead character, Austin Power, hunted the criminal that Gonzales imitated. Goldmember parodied Goldfinger, a James Bond blockbuster movie.

Jefferson notes that Gonzales’s case was the third in California he heard of in 2015. But there were more similar incidents in the region the past few years. He warned, “Plating one’s own genital will only ultimately end in serious medical complications or even death, as we have seen in this case.”

According to the LADbible, the tradition is traced to Mayans who painted their bodies with gold. The practice is based on their belief that gold empowers them, and they also consider it as an offering to their gods.
