2013 showcased some of the best movies in the drama category. With Golden Globes close at hand, let's take a look at the movies nominated and see which of them deserves to win the eminent award.

12 Year A Slave: Directed by Steve Mcqueen "12 Year A Slave" is a Britsih American epic historical drama. The movie has received immense critical appreciation and is the frontrunner for Golden Globes this year. According to Richard Corliss of Time, "Indeed, McQueen's film is closer in its storytelling particulars to such 1970s exploitation-exposés of slavery as Mandingo and Goodbye, Uncle Tom. Except that McQueen is not a schlockmeister sensationalist but a remorseless artist."

Captain Phillip: A Columbia Pictures' offering Captain Phillip is based on a historical incident where merchant mariner Captain Richard Phillip becomes a victim of Maersk Alabama hijacking and is taken hostage by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean. Like its counterparts, the movie has received critical acclaim and in all probability Paul Greengrass movie will give a neck-and-neck competition to "12 Year A Slave."

Gravity: A Sandra Bullock and George Clooney Vehicle is the biggest commercial success this year and without a doubt this movie about the fight for survival in space is going to garner a slew of awards at the Golden Globes. According to Matt Zoller Seitz of RogerEbert.com, "Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity," is about astronauts coping with disaster and a huge and technically dazzling film and that the film's panoramas of astronauts tumbling against star fields and floating through space station interiors are at once informative and lovely."

Other two films which are running in the Best Film (Drama) Golden Globes race include Philomena and Rush.
