'Gotham' Season 1 Episode 15 Recap: The Scarecow
Episode 15 of the new Fox drama “Gotham” is the second instalment of a two-part special. Episode 14 dealt with “The Fearsome Dr. Crane” and part 2 reveals the origins of another “Batman” super villain, “The Scarecrow.” Jim and Harvey are still on the hunt for Dr Gerald Crane who managed to evade arrest in the previous episode.
With Dr Crane still at large, more homicide victims with missing adrenal glands have been turning up. After doing some research, Jim and Harvey find out that Crane is a bio teacher. They go to his school and learn that he has been doing a study on using hormones from the adrenal gland to eliminate fear. The experiment aims to free an individual from feeling fear. The detectives also discover that Crane wants to experiment on himself and one other person.
Meanwhile, Dr Crane has already completed his formula and begins to experiment with his cocktail of hormones by injecting himself. After going through a series of shots, he determines that he has eliminated his fear and forces his son Jonathan to take the shots as well. He thinks that freeing the human race from fear will eliminate criminal activity as well as many other negative things in the world.
Jim and Harvey find out that Crane was unable to save his wife from a fire in their home several years ago. They determine that this must be the reason why he does not want to feel fear again. They come to arrest him at the old house and they end up interrupting Jonathan’s treatments. Crane becomes desperate and injects Jonathan with too much of his experimental serum. He then engages Jim and Harvey in a gun fight and he ends up dead.
Jonathan has some adverse reactions from the hormone overdose and is brought to the hospital. The doctor tells Jim that due to the injections, Jonathan has ended up in a state of constant terror. These series of events have started a chain reaction that would eventually turn Jonathan into “The Scarecrow.”
Back at the station, Jim’s new love interest, Dr Leslie Tompson, tells him that she’s been hired as the department’s new medical examiner. Even though it was Jim’s idea, he now feels that it might not be such a good thing. Her presence at work and her public displays of affection are starting to make him feel uncomfortable.
Meanwhile, Bruce decides to go on a hike alone. He becomes emotional doing it for the first time without his father. The hike is something that they have been doing together for years before his father was killed. Bruce ends up falling down a hill and injures his ankle. He struggles to get back up the hill and finds Alfred waiting at the top with a bonfire and a camp site ready. The two of them continue the father and son tradition of staying outdoors after a hike to wait for the sunrise.
On the mafia scene, Penguin asks Falcone for protection from Maroni who is still out to kill him. Falcone asks him to redecorate Mooney’s club and re-open it in order to generate money for the organisation. Penguin changes the club’s name to Oswald’s and plans for a grand opening.
Falcone tries to convince Maroni not to kill Penguin by giving him an eye for an eye. Falcone kidnaps a judge that Maroni hates and gives the man to him as a token. Maroni agrees to let Penguin live but doesn’t hesitate to mess up the club’s opening by coming to threaten him.
Fish Mooney got attacked at the end of last week’s episode as she was attempting to flee from Gotham. She now finds herself held captive by a mysterious man called Mace. He runs a small disorganised gang in a run-down undisclosed location. She outsmarts and kills him, then takes charge of the gang of vagabonds and small time crooks. The return of Fish Mooney to Gotham City appears to be coming sooner rather than later. Find out more in the upcoming episode of "Gotham," which airs Mondays on Fox.
