In this week’s episode of the Batman spin-off series “Gotham, ” Detective Jim Gordon and the rest of the police force discover that the past can always come back to haunt them. Episode 18 titled “Everyone Has A Cobblepot” refers to Oswald Cobblepot’s botched murder. Jim was blackmailed by the Mafia to kill Cobblepot, but the honest cop let him go. Cobblepot has since returned and has become both an ally and a nuisance for Jim’s police work.

Jim and his partner Harvey Bullock are shocked to learn that the dirty cop they put in jail, Detective Arnold Flass, has been set free. Apparently, a secret witness has presented new testimony which clears Flass of any wrongdoing. Jim confronts Commissioner Loeb and he learns that the witness was actually his partner Harvey. When he spoke to Harvey, he told Jim that Loeb has some evidence that can make him lose his job and land him in jail for the rest of his life. Harvey also said that Loeb has the same leverage on other cops and high ranking officials. Jim goes on a mission to find the evidence stash and enlists the help of Harvey Dent, an ambitious young lawyer that he has worked with before.

Jim digs for the stash of evidence with the help of Dent and Bullock. The most that the three of them figure out is that Loeb is working with Don Falcone. This leads Jim to revisit his friend Oswald Cobblepot or Penguin, who now works for Falcone. Penguin leads them to an old farmhouse where he believes the evidence may be kept. Jim and Harvey fail to find any hidden files in the house, but they discover Loeb’s mentally ill daughter being held captive there. Jim figures out that the girl killed Loeb’s wife and he has been covering it up to keep her out of Arkham Asylum.

Jim confronts Loeb and he admits that his daughter killed his wife. He offers to resign, but Jim tells him to stay so that they could work together. Loeb agrees to hand over the evidence file on Harvey Bullock and publicly expresses his support for Jim as a candidate in the Policeman’s Union. Jim starts to learn how to play the game and use leverage and blackmail as a means to an end when it comes to doing police work in Gotham City.

Meanwhile, Alfred is conscious and is recovering from the attack by Reggie Payne, which took place in the previous episode. Alfred knows that it was his old mate who stabbed him, but he refuses to let the police know so that he could investigate the matter himself. Alfred tells Bruce about his suspicions and the two of them figure out that someone in Wayne Enterprises has hired someone close to them to infiltrate Wayne Manor. Bruce discovers some of his files missing and he figures out that the board is shaken by his threat to investigate the company’s illegal activities.

Speaking of illegal activities, Fish Mooney wakes up on a hospital bed after she scooped her eye out in the previous episode. She finally meets Dr Francis Dulmacher, the founder of the facility where she is being held captive. Fish tries to strike a deal with the doctor to become his ally instead of his enemy. Dr Dulmacher reluctantly offers to test her to see if she can supply him with the bodies that he needs. In turn, she can become his lieutenant. Fish returns to the basement and quells the growing tension. She sends off the possible mutineers off to the doctor and gains his trust and the fear of the prisoners. The doctor agrees to work with her and she discovers that she can’t escape because they are in an isolated island.

Elsewhere in Gotham, Ed Nygma warns Kristen Kringle against dating the newly released Detective Flass again. She says she’s realised there are better men than Flass and this gives Nygma falses hope. He then asks her out but finds out she’s now dating Tom, another police officer. Nygma gets frustrated and starts to show signs of his personality, which would lead him into becoming “The Riddler.” How his story plays out and more interesting back stories are to be expected in next week’s episode of “Gotham.” The series airs Monday nights on Fox.
