'Gotham' Season 2, Episode 10 Recap: 'The Son of Gotham'
In this week’s episode of “Gotham,” Detective Gordon has a bad feeling about Theo Galavan’s (James Frain) trial. The Order of St. Dumas finally reveals itself, and Bruce Wayne finally catches a break in his quest to find his parents’ killer.
Detective Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) visits Theo Galavan in prison just before his trial. Jim gets a bad feeling about the trial, as Galavan appears to be too calm. He gets the nagging sensation that something is brewing, and Galavan will manage to escape a prison sentence.
Captain Barnes (Michael Chiklis) feels that former Mayor Aubrey James' testimony is rock solid. He is set to testify against Galavan and tell the court that he was held captive by the madman for well over a month and tortured by his sister, Tabitha (Jessica Lucas).
Jim seeks permission to investigate Galavan further, but Capt Barnes disagrees. Luckily for Jim, a series of brutal killings, reportedly perpetrated by monks, forces the Captain to let Jim investigate. Both of them found a monk’s cassock in Galavan’s apartment in last week’s episode, before they were attacked by hit men. Because of this, Barnes knows that it is worth investigating further.
Jim is determined to get to the bottom of Galavan’s plan. He is convinced that the series of killings in the city is connected to the businessman. He plans to find a connection between the murders of Sarah Essen, Penguin’s mother and even officer Catherine Parks, who was just killed by an assassin that was sent to kill Jim
JIm's partner Harvey (Donal Logue) digs up some information about the Order of St. Dumas, after investigating a symbol found in Galavan’s belongings. They pursue the lead and find the monks’ underground lair. They discover that the monks intend to sacrifice nine lives in the hopes of cleansing Gotham City from sin through a ritual. “The blood of the nine shall wash away the sin, and Gotham shall be cleansed,” states a passage that is being repeated by the monks.
Jim and Harvey manage to trick one of the monks into revealing that they are still after the final sacrifice. He refers to this person as “The Son of Gotham,” and this person is different from the first eight random victims.
While Jim is busy investigating the monks, his fears prove to be true. Former Mayor Aubrey James retracts his testimony and clears Galavan. He lies and says that it was Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) who kidnapped him, and not Galavan. Jim is furious but Galavan is released nonetheless.
Jim is kidnapped by Galavan’s thugs and the new Mayor tells Jim all about his involvement with the Order of St. Dumas. He reveals how his real family name is Dumas, and tells the story of how his ancestors were driven away from Gotham City about a century ago.
He lets his thugs finish off Jim, but luckily, Penguin comes to the rescue. He shows up and kills Galavan’s goons before they could kill Jim. He is on a mission to find Galavan and avenge his mother’s death.
Elsewhere, Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) continues to pursue Galavan’s information on the identity of his parents’ killer. With the help of Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova), he formulates a plan to get information out of Galavan’s niece, Silver St. Cloud.
Selina and Bruce set up a fake ploy to kidnap both Silver and Bruce. Some Irish thugs pretend to kidnap them and torture them. Silver finally breaks and reveals the name of a certain M. Malone, who she says is the man that her uncle thinks is the killer. Bruce lets her know that he is already aware that she has been manipulating him all along.
Bruce goes home, and he is satisfied with the information that he and Selina were able to gather through the game of deception. He is unaware that Alfred has been injured due to a confrontation with Tabitha Galavan while he was looking for Bruce.
While Alfred is gone, Galavan shows up at Wayne Manor and reveals that Bruce is “The Son of Gotham” that he is looking for.
“Gotham” airs every Monday at 8:00 p.m. ET on FOX in the U.S.
