'Gotham' Season 2: FOX releases new trailer focused on 'Rise of the Villains'
The latest trailer for Season 2 of the FOX drama series “Gotham” has been released. Once again, the video puts a heavy emphasis on the “Rise of the Villains,” which has been the pre-dominant theme given by the showrunners for Season 2. [Scroll down for video]
Actor Cameron Monaghan features prominently in the new trailer shared by IGN. He appears as young murderous psychopath Jerome Valeska, who is widely believed to be the young iteration of the Joker. The video opens with an exchange between lead protagonist Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzia) and Detective Sarah Essen (Zabryna Guevarra).
“A new day,” says Gordon. The two characters seem optimistic about Gotham City’s rebirth in the aftermath of the big mafia war in Season 1. Unfortunately for them, the villains have other ideas. Penguin (Robin Lord Tayor) is the new mayor of the underworld and he will stop at nothing to cement his position at the top. Ed Nygma, who has already started to transition into The Riddler (Cory Michael Smith) also appears in the trailer.
Valeska is seen in the video wreaking havoc with a violent attack on the Gotham City Police Department. He is joined by new additions Theo and Tabitha Galavan played by James Frain and Jessica Lucas. The pair have been cast as the sinister brother-sister duo who will bring in more chaos to the already tumultuous world of “Gotham.”
Valeska was first seen in Season 1 as the teenage son of a murdered circus performer. While the showrunner Bruno Heller hasn’t confirmed Jerome Valeska to be the Joker, Monaghan has already spoken openly about his role. He said in a recent interview that he intends to use his role as a tribute to all the other actors who held the role before him.
Other previously released Season 2 trailers have also put a heavy emphasis on the “Rise of the Villains.” Arkham Asylum will also be a central location of the story, with Valeska starting his violent journey from inside the institution.
“Gotham” Season 2 is scheduled to return on Monday, September 21 on FOX.
