Gotye, celebrating 6 weeks at the top

Melbourne singer Gotye has been attracting universal praise for his music and his popularity shows no signs of letting up as his single, "Somebody That I Used To Know", reaches its sixth week at Number 1 in the ARIA Singles Charts.

The single, featuring New Zealand singer Kimbra, is the first Australian-made single in 14 years to retain the top spot for such a length of time. The last single that achieved the feat was "Truly Madly Deeply" by Savage Garden back in 1997, which reached a mighty eight weeks at the top.

The album "Making Mirrors" from which the single originates has also reached number 1 in the album charts in what is proving to be a great year for Gotye. The single is already a hot favorite for number 1 in this years 'Triple J Hot 100' list.

The brooding, infectious single has attracted its share of celebrity admirers not just in Australia but around the world;

"This is kinda fantastic." tweeted Ashton Kutcher.

"Love this video," was the ringing endorsement of Lily Allen via her Twitter.

"New music discovery (for me!). Check out Gotye, specifically this song ft. The Lyrics are so true!." tweeted Katy Perry, who apparently loved the song so much that she bought the whole album.

Popularity for the track doesn't appear to be fading so "Somebody That I Used To Know" may well go on to outlast the 8 weeks at the top recorded by Savage Garden in 1997.
