The Federal Government is sending a plane to evacuate Australians trapped by the political crisis in Egypt, where at least 125 people have been killed in protests in the past six days.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard said the Government has organised a Qantas 747 charter flight for Australians trying to get out of Cairo on Wednesday.

About 1100 Australians were registered with the Australian embassy in Cairo, although it was likely there were more in Egypt.

Australian officials would stay in Egypt for now, Ms Gillard said. The Government is sending extra consular staff to Cairo airport to help those trying to get out of the country.

"We are going to monitor this closely, day by day, indeed hour by hour and if we think any further action is required then we'll take it and we'll certainly advise people of it publicly," said the Australian prime minister.

"Cairo airport is still operational. There is significant pressure on commercial flights and [there are] some disruptions and delays."

The free evacuation flight will fly from Cairo to either Frankfurt or London.

Australians need to call the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) if they wish to get on the flight.

Australians in Egypt can contact the Australian Embassy in Cairo on 2022 5750 444 and DFAT on +61 2 6261 3305. From within Australia, DFAT can be contacted on (02) 6261 3305
