GQ's editor Jim Nelson hits back at Parents Television Council over slammed Glee stars cover shoot
GQ editor in chief Jim Nelson did not mince a word in responding to the statement of Parents Television Council (PTC) slamming the magazine's November cover shoot featuring Glee stars Dianna Agron, Lea Michele and Cory Monteith in "very heightened versions of school characters."
Jim Nelson told The Insider that : "The [PTC] must not be watching much TV these days and should learn to divide reality from fantasy."
The GQ cover spread of Glee stars Monteith, Agron and Leah Michele was criticised by the Hollywood watchdog calling the GQ's photographs as bordering on pedophilia.
PTC President Tim Winter said: "It is disturbing that GQ, which is explicitly written for adult men, is sexualizing the actresses who play high school-aged characters on 'Glee' in this way. It borders on pedophilia. Sadly, this is just the latest example of the overt sexualization of young girls in entertainment" (See full report here: GQ cover shoot of Glee stars Monteith, Michele and Agron slammed by Parents Television Council)
However, GQ's Nelson contradicted Winter's statement and said that "as often happens in Hollywood, these 'kids' are in their twenties. Cory Monteith is almost 30! I think they're old enough to do what they want."
Glee star Dianna Agron echoed Nelson's statement in a post on her blog: "I am twenty-four years old. I have been a pretty tame and easy-going girl my whole life. Nobody is perfect, and these photos do not represent who I am."
Agron hit backed at PTC, rhetorically asking how on earth could a child get hold of a GQ copy. (See full report here: Glee star Dianna Agron breaks silence on GQ photo shoot controversy).
"I understand that in today's world of advanced technology, the internet, our kids can be subject to very adult material at the click of a button. But there are parental locks, and ways to get around this," wrote the Glee star.
In the accompanying article for the GQ photographs, Glee creator Ryan Murphy said Glee is not a family show, but his own version of the family show, although the Glee cast and crew try to be responsible as youngsters are also watching.
