The Grammy Award winner singer Cesaria Evora died last Saturday at the age of 70.

Also known in the industry as the 'Barefoot Diva,' she started young as a singer as early as her teenage years right in the series of bars found in Cape Verde during the fifties. She had this unique image just because she literally performs without any shoes on.

Her label management did not discuss the details of her death but it was mentioned that she passed way in Baptista de Sousa hospital located in her native island. It was recalled that she retired way back in September due to some serious health problems. She also underwent operations with regards to her open heart surgery.

Her own singing style was deeply compared with the sounds produced by Billie Holiday. Le Monde, a French newspaper, even described her as someone who belongs to the "aristocracy of bar singers." Evora simply had that smooth voice that can melt any soul.

But her fame in the international level came in late when her album was released in 1998 yet recorded in France called "Barefoot Diva" or "La Vida Aux Pieds Nus."

During the Grammy Awards, she won the World Music category award for her album entitled 'Voz D'Amor' in 2003.

She was known for being a heavy smoker for ten years and suffered strokes since 2008 with diagnosed heart problems way back in 2005. She was never married but she had one daughter and one son.
