Grey's Anatomy was on a shaky ground for a while, as the original cast - including Patrick Dempsey - had not signed new contracts weeks before the Season 8 finale broadcast. In an interview, Dempsey explained why he signed on for two more years on the series. He also talked about an ideal series finale.

In an interview with Michael Ausiello of TV Line, Dempsey was rather straightforward in explaining his reason for signing a new Grey's contract.

"I had a long time where I wasn't working. I was struggling. So why not? And the money's good. I would be stupid to say no," he said.

Asked how he imagined the series finale of Grey's Anatomy, Dempsey said:

"Gosh. I hope it's not something traumatic like another plane crash or somebody getting run over by a bus. I think [life will] sort of just go on. I think it would just go out very simply - and leave it open for the movie."

You cannot blame the actor for imagining such a boring finale by Shonda Rhimes standard. Dempsey's character, Derek Shepherd aka McDreamy, has faced more than enough in the series. Remember the time Derek was shot? Oh, and Derek has yet to come back to his life as a surgeon after the plane crash in last season's finale.

McDreamy: Keep Calm, Be Thankful

So, what has been happening to McDreamy lately?

Derek Shepherd's prized surgeon hand was seriously damaged in the crash. But he tells his wifey Meredith Grey, they are fine. Zola has her parents. That's enough, he said. Callie repairs his hand. Then he goes back to the OR and drops an instrument because his hand has gone numb. He has good days and he has bad days. But on most days, McDreamy seems to be on Zen-mode. He's just grateful that he and Meredith survived the crash.
