‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 12 Spoilers: Penny changes Calzona dynamic
There is no new “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 12 episode this week, as the ABC medical drama is now on winter hiatus. Here’s a look back to the stories of Penny, Calzona and Meredith Grey.
Spoiler alert: This update contains major “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 12 spoilers. Read on at your own risk if you have not watched the latest episodes on ABC. Streaming is available via ABC Go.
Who is Penny Blake (Samantha Sloyan)? Avid viewers first saw Penny in Season 11. She was one of the doctors who failed to save Patrick Dempsey’s Derek Shepherd. After tearfully apologising to Meredith a year ago, Penny returns in “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 12 Episode 5 (“Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”).
Episode 5 is the second most viewed episode of the season, so far. The most viewed “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 12 episode is the premiere, which drew nearly 10 million viewers in the U.S. alone, according to reports.
Derek died because Penny failed to fight for the right procedure for him. When Penny apologised to Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), the widow told her to learn from the tragedy. Meredith did not know Penny would learn – literally – at Grey-Sloan Memorial. Some luck for Mer and Derek’s sister Amelia (Caterina Scorsone)!
It so happens that Penny is also the new girlfriend of Callie (Sara Ramirez).
Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) has met Penny and she was pleased to feel zero resentment against Callie’s new girlfriend or the fact that Callie has moved on. Now, fans are wondering: Does Penny spell the end of all hope for a Callie-Arizona reunion? Calzona, as fans call the couple, has not shown any signs of getting back together. Their dynamic has changed tremendously since getting married in “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 7.
As Penny’s mentor in “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 12, Meredith has struggled in keeping things professional. Callie has confronted her about this, and it may have permanently strained their friendship. On top of that, Penny’s arrival also caused conflict between Meredith and Amelia.
Despite the chaos she is inadvertently causing, Penny is expected to stick around in “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 12. Shonda Rhimes -- the program creator of both “Scandal” and “Grey’s Anatomy” – is believed to have longterm plans for the actress.
Sloyan also stuck around for a while in “Scandal” as Jeannine Locke, the fake mistress of President Grant (Tony Goldwyn).
