Grey’s Anatomy Season 9: ‘I want to see that Derek and Meredith are a happy, sexy couple’ – Shonda Rhimes
'Grey's Anatomy' Season 9 is coming back in the fall, and with the little waiting time left, fans are getting more anxious to find out what happens next among the beloved characters in the series. Series creator Shonda Rhimes said she has told her writers that she wants the top couple in the series to be "happy and sexy."
In an interview with TV Line, Rhimes hinted she would like to be consistent with what she had said earlier: Season 9 will be a "Year of Romance."
"One of the things I said to the writers was, 'I want a lot more romantic scenes. I want to see that Derek and Meredith are a happy, sexy couple.' They basically settled down in a lot of ways. They are very settled. They're married, they have a child, and they're both working. I want to see what that means for them as a couple and how they, against the odds, manage to keep that relationship sexy and fun. So we're playing with that and it's been really fun," Rhimes said.
Wedding, Departure, New Home, New Friendship and Romance (Spoiler Alert)
So far, based on reports and interviews with characters, there are five things viewers can expect from the series next season: a wedding, a departure, a new home, a blossoming of friendship, and "a lot more romantic scenes."
Keeping up with Rhimes' demand for romance is the character played by Chandra Wilson, Dr. Miranda Bailey. She is set to marry in a "non-traditional" manner. Miranda is perhaps thinking that she has gone through all the marriage hoopla, and wound up divorcing the man, anyway.
Meanwhile, Eric Dane is leaving the series. Rhimes remains mum on how his character Mark Sloan will exit, but Wilson has said in a previous interview that Dane will shine as an actor in his final episodes.
Meredith and Derek will finally get to move to their dream house. This is probably going to develop after Sloan's death-or-departure. TV Line reported Derek would be particularly close to Callie Torres, and this could be because Callie would be the most hurt and devastated by Sloan's "exit."
When it comes to "a lot of romance," Jackson Avery and April Kepner would probably get to know each other better. Alex Karev will also reportedly meet someone new.
These are only a few of the many things to look forward to in Grey's Anatomy when its Season 9 premieres on Sept. 27.
