'Grey's Anatomy' wins 'Favourite Network TV Drama,' Ellen Pompeo wins 'Favourite Dramatic TV Actress'
"Grey’s Anatomy" won “Favourite Network TV Drama,” with leading lady Ellen Pompeo landing “Favourite Dramatic TV Actress" in the 2016 People's Choice Awards on Wednesday.
The show won in the category amidst tough competition from other shows like "Empire," "Gotham," "How To Get Away With Murder" and "Scandal." Shonda Rhimes, who is the executive producer of the show, also works on "How To Get Away With Murder" and "Scandal."
Pompeo credited the success of the show to Shonda Rhimes and said that the show was so popular because its story revolves around understanding, compassion, tolerance and kindness, and added that those are themes that people could use more of.
The series focuses on the fictional work lives of surgical interns and residents as they gradually evolve into seasoned doctors while trying to juggle their personal lives and relationships. Ellen Pompeo plays one of the lead characters, Meredith Grey.
“Grey's Anatomy” is one of the highest-rated dramas. The series has received numerous awards, and has also been included in various critics' top ten lists. It is the recipient of the 2007 Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series — Drama and multiple Emmy nominations, including two for Outstanding Drama Series. The show has won a total of 14 People’s Choice Awards to date.
“Grey's Anatomy,” which is currently on it’s 12th season, airs on Thursdays on ABC.
