Grigor Dimitrov Favoured To Win A Grand Slam In 2015
One of tennis' rising stars Grigor Dimitrov is favoured to win a Grand Slam title in the 2015 season. Tennis legend John McEnroe reckons that the current season is the time for Dimitrov to win a major title and he thinks that the Bulgarian can win it in Wimbledon.
"The next new guy that is going to win really big and break through to win a major, in my opinion, is Dimitrov," McEnroe told The Times. "If I had to pick where, I'd say it would happen at Wimbledon this year, I think he has what it takes to beat Djokovic there, Wimbledon is made for him."
The 2014 season was a breakthrough season for Dimitrov. He fared well in two of the Grand Slam tournaments, making it in the quarterfinals and semifinals of the Australian Open and Wimbledon, respectively.
From the 23rd spot, Dimitrov has achieved his career-high singles ranking at the 8th place in August. He ended the season ranked as World No. 11. He had a record of 50-18 and won three titles including his first-ever grass-court title at the Queen's Club Aegon Championships in London.
As Dimitrov continues his journey in the 2015 tennis season, he said during an interview after his win over Jeremy Chardy, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8), at Brisbane International, that he hopes to break the top five of the world rankings. He said he is aware that he needs to play his best tennis to win Grand Slam tournaments and other big tennis events to boost his world rankings.
Currently, Dimitrov is getting ready for the Australian Open. After the withdrawal of reigning U.S. champion Marin Cilic, who was forced to pull out due to a shoulder injury, Dimitrov was awarded the 10th seed in the tournament.
In his Australian Open campaign last year, Dimitrov has progressed easily defeating Bradley Klahn, Yen-Hsun Lu, Milos Raonic, and Roberto Bautista-Agut to reach to quarterfinals. He lost to then World No. 1 Rafael Nadal, 6-3, 6-7(3), 6-7(7), 2-6.
The main draw of the Australian Open will take place on Jan. 16. The tournament officially kicks off on Jan. 19.
