A rally for equal marriage was held last Saturday in Melbourne, with 2,500 attendees. However, it seems that it was not able to get support from other parts of the nation.

This is most probably because the rally focused on marriage, although its real aim is to fight for equality.

In South Africa and the American South there exists 'separate but equal' laws, but they were practically never equal. Thus, one law for the straight and one law for the gay means to legislate unequal laws.

Although there are the so-called 'alternative partnership schemes', these are only benefitial for those who have no plans of getting married.

To act before the upcoming elections is a good strategy, but there should also be other ways on how people can show their support.

More Australians should participate in the campaign: people involved in business, organisations, professional associations, churches, mosques, synagogues, and the like.

It is an advantage that people with big names, like Sir Ian McKellen and Dannii Minogue, are coming out to show their support. However, the campaign needs more back up from famous people, as well as politicians.

Based on the polls, around 60 percent of Australians are in favor of equal marriage. More people should just step forward and voice out their support.
